Henry Ford College wins their first ever MCCAA Wrestling Championship

The Henry Ford College wrestling team claimed their first ever MCCAA Championship on Saturday. The championship was held on Saturday at Muskegon Community College. The 13th ranked Hawks scored 88 points to claim the title while, St. Clair County Community College game in second with 77 points. Ancilla College was third with 52 points and Muskegon Community College with fourth with 43 points. Henry Ford becomes just the fourth school to win the MCCAA wrestling title. Muskegon, Schoolcraft College and Grand Rapids Community College are the other schools.

In the 125 pound weight class semi-final, Cody Wood of St. Clair defeated Alex Cantu of Muskegon in a 10-2 major decision. In the championship match Donte Riveria-Garcia of Henry Ford pinned Wood at the 6:40 mark of the match to claim the title. 

In the first 133 pound weight class semi-final. Assel Almudhala of Henry Ford defeated Scott Kettel of St. Clair by fall in just 1:29. In the second semi-final, James Davis of Ancilla defeated Cody Miller of Muskegon when he was injured in the first period. In the championship, Almudhala defeated Davis 8-6. 

In the semi-final of the 141 pound weight class, Bryan Jones of Muskegon beat Nelson Roberts of Ancilla by a pin in just 0:35 seconds. In the championship match Jones won a major decision over Scott Torres of Henry Ford College 10-2. 

In the 149 pound weight class first semi-final, Elijah Kidder of Henry Ford beat Issac Trout of Muskegon CC 6-4, while in the other semi-final match Ashton Philburn of St. Clair pinned Thaddeus Dietrich of Ancilla in 2:00. The championship match went to Kidder by fall over Philburn by a 6-3 decision. 

The 157 pound weight class only had two wrestlers, so in the Championship match Jacob Horst of St. Clair defeated Gabriel Lee by fall in 1:23. 

In the 165 pound weight class Vincent Savaya of Henry Ford won over Zach Sykes of Muskegon by injury default. In the championship, Tykease Baker of Ancilla pinned Savaya at the 4:07 of the match. 

In the semi-final of the 174 pound weight class Diante Taylor of Henry Ford d. Jack Ferrara-Jewell of St. Clair in a hotly contested match by a score of 4-3. In the championship, defending champion Trystan Van Der Aa of Ancilla defeated Taylor by an 8-4 score. 

The 184 pound weight class semi-final was won by Jared St. James of St. Clair over Jordy Garcia of Ancilla by a fall at the 4:51 mark of the match. Dean Elder won the championship match by fall over St. James at the 3:42 mark. 

The semi-final of the 197 pound weight class semi-final went to Thomas Tyson of St. Clair by pin over Jake Campbell at the 4:17 mark. In the championship, Jake Renfer of Muskegon won the title by fall over Tyson at the 4:20 mark. 

In the heavyweight class, Jackson Schenk of St. Clair defeated Garrett Clark of Ancilla in the semi-final by fall at the 6:52 mark. Schneck then took the championship by pin over Hill at the 2:07 mark. 

Schnek was named the MCCAA Wrestler of the Year by the coaches. The MCCAA Freshman of the Year is Donte Riveria-Garcia of Henry Ford College. Grant McKenzie of Henry Ford College was tabbed as the MCCAA Coach of the Year.
